Dec 11 - 15, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can appreciate multiple points of view, languages, cultures and experiences within my groups and communities.

Hearing our students share about their family traditions has been so wonderful. We have loved hearing the stories, seeing the artifacts and watching the family videos. Thank you for supporting your child in this learning. When students are presenting, I observe the other students with their active listening skills. I am looking for students to sit, watch the speaker, and keep their hands to themselves.  For presenters, I am looking for students who can explain what a tradition is, what the tradition they are presenting is and why it is important to them. As a class, we discuss the traditions and how they are similar to each other and how they are different.

Upcoming Dates:

  • Monday, December 18 - Festive Hat or Hair Day
  • Tuesday, December 19 - Dress Like An Elf Day
  • Tuesday, December 19 afternoon - Our class performs in our dress rehearsal
  • Tuesday, December 19 evening - Our class performs in the evening concert

Dec 4 - Dec 8, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Reminder: Please sign and return the Alien Inline Acknowledgement of Risk and Consent form.

Learning Intention: I can print letters with appropriate size, shape and spacing. I can apply capital letters at the beginning of my sentences. I can use punctuation at the end of a sentence. I can edit my written work for spelling and punctuation.

Students work on their printing and writing daily. We use Super Sentences to practice the skills of alignment, spacing of words and letters, letter formation, letter size and punctuation. We want students to have these printing skills become automatic so they can free up working memory for other skills such as spelling and writing with a purpose. When your child is writing at home, encourage them to print in a straight line, with finger spaces and proper letter formation (starting our letters at the top). We also have free writing where students have the opportunity to write about a topic of their choosing. Our goal is to see their purpose, ideas and opinions shine through in this writing. Students become authors and share their writing at the end of each day if they choose to.

Nov. 27 - Dec 1, 2023

 Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can identify measurable properties of objects. I can directly compare the length, area and weight of different objects. I can demonstrate safety and respect during investigations.

We have been busy in science! In class, students have been learning about objects and how to measure and compare objects. We are looking to see if students can measure using non-standard measurements (ex: blocks) to find the length, area and weight of an object. We are also looking to see if students can order the objects from least to greatest. Students had a lot of fun experimenting with scales to find weight.

On our field trip to TELUS Spark Science Centre, we had the opportunity to perform different experiments. We look at how to use equipment safely to protect ourself and others. I wonder what your child can tell you about the experiments we completed and why those reactions happened. We worked with materials such as Epsom salts, digital scales, thermometers and beakers. See if your child can show you how to do a perfect pour from one container to another without spilling!

As a reminder, please ensure your child has enough to eat during the day. We work hard and their brains and bodies get hungry. Thank you so much!
