Hello, Grade 1 Families, 

Learning Intention: I can compose and decompose two- or three-dimensional composite shapes.

This week we focused on 2D shapes. Initially, we began by identifying squares, rectangles and triangles. Then we moved into sorting our shapes by different sorting rules. Students worked with partners and one partner sorted the shapes and the other partner had to guess the sorting rule. The real fun began when we started to create designs using 2D shapes. There are many photos below of their designs.  The criteria for their designs were they had to work in teams and only connect sides of the same length of shapes. As we moved through this students were asked to build designs of objects that moved, floated, sank and flew. By the end of the week, we were talking about how to take shapes apart or find other shapes within a shape. Ask your child about the 3 squares of paper we used to do this task and what shapes they made. During this, I am looking for students to be able to identify shapes, sort using 1attribute and create or take apart shapes to make new shapes.

Hello, Grade 1 Families, 

Learning Intention: I can demonstrate various ways of moving safely through space during physical activity. 

What a week! Alien Inline Skating was so much fun!! And we all learned so much. I am so very proud of each student. Every student skated. Every student learned to turn. Every student learned to stop. Students were careful around others and watched their space to make sure their classmates did not get run over. Ask your child how Greg taught them to stand up, what letter their feet should be in to skate and how to stop. We were fortunate to have Grade 5 friends come in and help us put on our equipment. Students learned how to protect their bodies and be safe.
