Hello, Grade 1 Families,
Learning Intention: I can blend sounds in words with speed and accuracy to decode unfamiliar words. I can read High-Frequency Words automatically. I can read High-Frequency Words in sentences and texts. I can read phrases smoothly, taking punctuation into consideration. I can read texts aloud, with appropriate expression.
Wow! That is a lot our littles have to be able to do with reading! We have learned how to read and spell words with digraphs (ex: sh, ch, ph), and learned the spelling rule for Magic e (silent e on the end of a sentence jumps over the consonant and taps the vowel on the head "say your name", ex: like) and the _ce spelling pattern (c makes a soft sound when followed by an e ex: rice). Students are learning to identify these words, read them and spell them. See if your child can find examples of these words in the books they read at home. These patterns give our children more tools to use when reading and expanding their knowledge. "I can read so many of these words in these books!" was shared today. When reading, our goal is to continue decoding and work on fluency. We want readers to sound the way they speak and not like robots. Repeated reading of the same material helps build fluency as students are not using their working memory to decode words but focusing on fluency. When I read with students, I am looking for readers to decode words quickly, read sentences with a conversational tone, follow punctuation (stopping at periods), and begin to add expression when they see a question or exclamation mark.
Teacher's Pet: A Day at the Racetrack
Thank you to all of the volunteers who came and supported us! This was fun for our students and an engaging way to learn about movement. Race cars will go home before Spring Break.
Conferences
Before or after your 15-minute conference booking, please take some time to look at the work your child has completed. I plan on having their writing folders and visual journals out for you to look at as well as materials for your child to teach you a math addition game.
Pyramid: Making 10 video - This is one game your child might teach you at Conferences.
Swimming Lessons
Grade 1 will have the opportunity to have swimming lessons at the end of April. We require at least one male in the changing room each day. If you are thinking of getting your police clearance, it would be amazing if you could do this ASAP toe ensure we can have enough males helping out. Thank you!!!
