April 22 - 26, 2024

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can add and subtract within 20, with automaticity.

Students have been working on addition and subtraction facts within 20. This week we began focusing on knowing our facts with automaticity. Ask your child what automaticity means. See if they can give you an example. I have worked with each child individually to see what fact families they know with automaticity. From there, students are given a booklet to complete different facts within an addition strategy such as doubles or adding within 10. Once they have completed the booklet showing the addition facts in multiple ways, they move on to games and flash cards. When they are confident in their automaticity, they complete a "Show What You Know" and if successful, can move on to the next strategy. This sets your child up for multi-digit addition and subtraction in Grade 2 and multiplication and division in Grade 3. Below is a link to a balance scale we used in class to begin our work with algebra.

What a wonderful experience we had on Monday. Students spent the day learning on and from the land. We went for a nature walk where we looked at the Rocky Mountains, which we then painted with watercolours. We looked at antlers from different animals found on the land. See if your child can remember which animal it is that both the male and female have antlers, as usually only males have antlers. The biggest excitement of the day was that we learned about scat. See if your child can tell you the difference between moose and deer scat. While painting the Rocky Mountains, we learned about the different layers in our work, the foreground, middle ground and background. See if your child can tell you what they saw in each. Before our trip and during our trip, we learned a lot about AC Leighton and his wife, Barbara. AC Leighton created a lot of artwork for CPR using sketching and painting. Barbara had many different art styles, I wonder if your child can tell you about some that we saw in our Museum Kit.

Thank you so much to the volunteers who came with us. We appreciate you, your love of learning and your enthusiasm.
