Hello, Grade 1 Families,
I hope you had an amazing Spring Break! It was wonderful to see all of the smiling faces return this week.
Learning Intention: I can add and subtract within 20. I can express addition and subtraction symbolically. I can solve problems using addition and subtraction. I can recall addition and subtraction number facts within 20.
This week we spent a lot of time talking about addition (joining together) and finding ways to make 10 (a more friendly number to work with). Students showed their learning using counters, writing number sentences, playing card games and completing a problem-solving task. I will send home the problem-solving task next week. In addition, students are expected to be able to add and subtract within 20 and be able to recall with automaticity. We will be working on fact families, based on what skill each child needs to work on, in the coming days and weeks. We have talked about using our fingers and how this is a great strategy for them. Students can also make groups of objects (counters, beans, pasta noodles) and join them together. See what addition and subtraction problems you can find for your child at home!
Thank you to all of those who have returned all of the permission forms for swimming and the Leighton Centre. I know this was a lot of paperwork and I appreciate your promptness.
