April 15 - 19, 2024

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can appreciate how stories and events of the past are connected to my family and communities of the present.

Students took time this week to learn about "the past", what does it mean? How is the past different in different communities? We set this learning around the Leighton Art Centre and compared it to Lake Bonavista. Students explored what communities looked like years before. We also learned about urban, rural and suburban communities. Ask your child what they noticed the similarities and differences are between Lake Bonavista, downtown Calgary and the Leighton Art Centre area. Listed below are some great ways to explore the past with your family.

  1. Family Storytime: Gather around and share stories from the past with your child. Whether it's tales of your own childhood adventures or stories passed down through generations, storytelling is a powerful way to bring history to life.

  2. Visit Historical Sites: Take a family trip to a museum, or historical landmark. Encourage your child to ask questions and explore the artifacts and exhibits on display. It's a hands-on way to connect with the past and learn about different periods.

  3. Explore Family History: Dive into your own family's history with your child. Look through old photo albums, share family traditions, and talk about your ancestors. You might even create a simple family tree together to visualize your family's roots.

  4. Hands-On Activities: Get creative with hands-on activities that transport your child back in time. Try cooking a historical recipe together, dressing up in costumes from different periods, or crafting artifacts inspired by ancient civilizations.

  5. Read Together: Explore children's books that bring history to life in a way that's accessible and engaging for young learners. Look for stories about famous historical figures, significant events, and different cultures from around the world.

Happy Exploring!
